Family of the late Toots Hibbert has issued a cease-and-desist letter to the remaining members of the band barring them from performing under the name, The Maytals.
The Maytals band members were a part of the original Toots and The Maytals band, of which Toots Hibbert was the main act up until his death.
Jamaican music lovers reacted with mixed feelings some in support of the notice while some terming it as unfair to band members and an injustice by denying them a source of income.
The Estate of late reggae icon Toots Hibbert threatens to sue The Maytals band over the continued use of the name.
Known for songs such as “Bam Bam” and “Pressure Drop”, Toots and The Maytals won the 2021 Grammy for Best Reggae Album for their last project “Got to Be Tough.”
Toots Hibbert died at the age of 77 from COVID-19 complications on September 11, 2020, at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.
