CRATE CHALLENGE, FUN OR FOOLISH !?
The Milk Crate Challenge began as a quest to counter boredom or to exhibit people’s athletic side after the Tokyo Olympics, with people seen taking up the challenge and stacking plastic crates in the shape of a pyramid. Climbing up and down without any support or protective gear, they scaled the shaky obstacles for fun with breathtaking moments. The challenge has become so popular, particularly in the US, that even official social media accounts have been set up.
She successfully completed the challenge in high heels
Now, moving beyond TikTok where it originally began, the challenge has been a hit on Instagram and Twitter as well. From taking up the dangerous task in heels to some even attempting while doing some light tusks, hundreds of videos are flooding social media.
In one viral challenge, a lady in high heels is seen miraculously and successfully completing the challenge while in another video, a seemingly athletic lady is seen tumbling down from one of the highest crate piles in the challenge. It is said that most of these challenges have a monetary incentive hence gaining more entries and popularity.
It did not end well for this big fellow
However, not all managed to complete the challenge after a couple of videos showed some dangerous falls, raising some serious concern among health professionals. Doctors are advising people not to take up the risky challenge highlighting that such falls could result in some serious emergency surgeries if not some fatal injuries. In some regions, medics are saying that hospital workers are already overworked with the rising Covid-19 cases and are urging all to be safe and not attempt something potentially harmful.
DOCTORS HAVE THEIR SAY
Doctors are warning that the Milk Crate Challenge is very dangerous and that many orthopedic injuries have already occurred as a result of falls. Orthopedic specialists warn that injuries can include shoulder dislocations, broken wrists, ACL and meniscus tears as well as life-threatening conditions like spinal cord injuries. This goes on amidst disappointment from a few, sighting rapper Snoop Doggy Dog as a big propagator of the potentially dangerous challenge. Snoop’s Instagram account seems to be getting thousands of traffic commenting on his many milk crate challenge posts.
Time and again, virtual challenges have taken a risky turn, raising alarm among public and health experts. From Drake’s Kiki challenge in 2018 to the Bird Boc challenge in 2019 numerous dangerous activities have taken social media by storm, and this is no exception. On a lighter note, there have been calls to recognize the Crate challenge as a sport whereby participants must wear protective gear like helmets and knee caps. Whether these suggestions will see the light of day remains to be a challenge in itself.
